Thing 2: Thoughts About Web 2.0

September 15th, 2008 by travel1 in Uncategorized · No Comments

Watching the video clips from Thing 1 gave me a deeper perspectve on digital learning and learners. The blogs, podcasts, wikis, etc, etc, are not merely adjuncts to learning but they are to a large extent the present and future of teaching and learning for all of us. What I find both amazing and frightening is the sheer amount of information and sharing that can take place so quickly. A new challenge is to equip our students and ourselves to use these tools critically. Yes, we can access the world, but alot of what is shared is of queestionable value and/or a total waste of time. So Web 2.0 creates both opportunity and an imperative to engage the learners in critical thinking.

Thing 1: Refelctions on Life Long Learning

September 15th, 2008 by travel1 in Uncategorized · No Comments

Hello fellow Web 2.0 learners! This is my first official experience with a blog, other than finding one randomly through Google when searching for information on one topic or another. After much thought about which habit of Life Long Learners (LLL) is the most challenging – and it was difficult deciding on one – I felt that creating my own learning tool box seemed to fit the bill. I work in the Media Center of a preschool -8th grade school. But my education, training and work experiences have largely been built on more traditional tools – books, classrooms (not virtual ones), conferences, and people to people interaction in person, through email or on the telephone. The kind of tools that I have begun to sample through this course have given me a glimpse of the possibilities of what can be. Yet assembling  and becoming familiar with these tools will require time and much trial and error. Creating this blog  was a big step for me!

The easiest habit would be to play. Since most (OK, almost all) of this course content is new to me, I am curious about everything.

The most important habit for me is to have confidence in myself as a competent and effective learner. I want to feel comfortable discussing and using many of these tools in my school. Like any other skill I have learned through the years, the more familiar i become with the task, the less intimidated and more confident i will feel using it. I have been an effective learner in many other areas, why not technology!
